Chapter 6 - The Ransom

I stared at the screen, my entire body shaking with unimaginable rage and terror.
Damon casually wiped a speck of blood from his expensive suit jacket.
"Your father fought bravely, Clara," Damon sneered into the camera.
"But bravery means nothing against an army of paid professionals."
My father looked up at the camera, his face bruised and swollen.
"Don't give him the drive, Clara," my father shouted before a guard struck him across the face.
I screamed, gripping the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned completely white.
"What do you want, Damon?" I begged, tears streaming down my face.
"I want my property back," Damon replied with chilling calmness.
"Meet me at my corporate headquarters in exactly two hours."
"Bring the flash drive and sign the custody papers, or I will send your father back in pieces."
The screen went black before I could say another word.
Lacey groaned in the passenger seat, clutching her bleeding side.
"It is a trap, Clara," Lacey whispered weakly.
"He is going to kill both of you the second you hand over that drive."
I knew she was right, but I had absolutely no other choice.
I drove like a madwoman through the dark mountain roads until we reached the city limits.
I dropped Lacey off at the emergency room doors, pressing the flash drive into her hands.
"Give this to the federal authorities," I told her, looking her dead in the eyes.
"I am going to distract him."
I drove toward the massive glass skyscraper that housed Damon's corrupt empire.
The building was entirely dark except for the penthouse suite at the very top.
I stepped out of the truck, the freezing wind whipping my hair across my face.
As I walked toward the heavy glass doors, a sharp, agonizing pain ripped through my lower back.

Warm fluid suddenly rushed down my legs, soaking my pants.
My water had just broken, and I was going into premature labor on my enemy's doorstep.
