Chapter 9 - The Ghost from the Past

Daniel stumbled backward as if he had been punched in the chest.
His dead wife was standing right in front of him, holding their terrified daughter.
"Sarah? How is this possible?" Daniel stammered, his mind spinning out of control.
Sarah let out a cruel, mocking laugh that sent chills down his spine.
"The car crash was the perfect way to disappear," she explained coldly.
"I needed the cartel to think I was dead so I could keep all the stolen money."
"But you left us," Daniel whispered. "You left your own child."
Sarah rolled her eyes and tightened her grip on Lily's jacket.
"Lily was always just an insurance policy to me," Sarah said without emotion.
"Now throw the drive over here, or the insurance policy expires tonight."
Daniel looked at the terrified tears streaming down his daughter's face.
He realized the woman he had mourned for four years was a complete monster.
"Toss it, Daniel!" Sarah screamed, pulling a silver pistol from her coat pocket.
Daniel raised his arm and threw the silver USB drive across the wet pavement.
Sarah let go of Lily to catch the device with both hands.
"Run, Lily!" Daniel roared at the top of his lungs.
The little girl sprinted across the wet concrete toward her father.
Sarah snarled in anger and raised her pistol toward Daniel's chest.
Before she could pull the trigger, a loud gunshot echoed from the shipping containers.
The bullet struck the gun right out of Sarah's hand, shattering the weapon.
Nora leaped down from the high container, keeping her rifle aimed at Sarah.
"Federal agent, get on the ground right now!" Nora commanded loudly.
Sarah held her bleeding hand and glared at Nora with pure hatred.
Suddenly, four armed men stepped out from the shadows behind the SUV.
They raised their automatic weapons and pointed them at Daniel and Nora.
"You really thought I came alone to a ransom drop?" Sarah sneered.
She pulled a small remote detonator from her other pocket.
"I laced this entire dock with C4 explosives before you arrived."
Sarah pressed her thumb firmly against the red trigger button.

"Goodbye, Daniel," she whispered with a wicked grin.
Nothing happened.
