Chapter 2 - The Race Against Time

Daniel felt his heart stop beating in his chest.

He spun around and looked at Lily's empty plastic cup on the table.

He dropped to his knees and pulled his daughter into his arms.

"Lily, sweetie, how do you feel?" he begged.

The little girl looked at him with wide, terrified eyes.

Before she could answer, Daniel pulled his cell phone from his pocket.

His fingers shook as he dialed 911 for an ambulance.

"My daughter has been poisoned," he screamed into the phone.

He turned to glare at Nora, who was slowly backing away toward the door.

"If anything happens to her, I will kill you myself," Daniel vowed.

Suddenly, a terrible gagging sound came from the corner of the room.

Daniel looked over and saw Buster, their golden retriever, twitching on the floor.

The dog had licked the hissing liquid off the marble tiles.

Within seconds, the large animal stopped moving entirely.

Daniel grabbed Lily and sprinted toward the front door.

He locked Nora inside the dining room from the outside.

Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Daniel hugged his crying daughter, praying she would survive the night.

The paramedics rushed into the house and quickly examined the little girl.

The lead medic looked at Daniel with a very confused expression.

"Sir, your daughter has zero toxins in her system," the medic announced.

Daniel stared at the medic in utter shock.

He heard the sound of breaking glass coming from the back of the house.

Nora had escaped through the dining room window.

It read, "She is safe for now, but they are coming for her tonight."
