Chapter 5 - The Man in the Shadows

Daniel told his security guards to lock the hotel door and let no one inside.
He sprinted to his car and drove wildly toward Marcus's estate.
Rain pounded against the windshield as he pushed the engine to its limit.
Marcus was his oldest friend and the co-founder of their tech empire.
If Marcus was the man in the closet, Daniel's entire life was a lie.
Daniel arrived at the massive gates of the estate and found them wide open.
He pulled his weapon from the glovebox and crept toward the front door.
The heavy mahogany door was left slightly ajar.
Daniel pushed it open and stepped into the silent, dark foyer.
"Marcus!" Daniel yelled, keeping his gun raised.
The only response was the sound of a television blaring in the study.
Daniel carefully made his way down the hallway.
He found Marcus sitting in a leather armchair, holding a glass of whiskey.
Marcus looked completely calm and unbothered by the intrusion.
"Where is Nora?" Daniel demanded, aiming the gun at his partner.
Marcus took a slow sip of his drink and smiled.
"Nora is not the enemy here, Daniel," Marcus said quietly.
"Then why were you hiding in my daughter's closet today?" Daniel asked.
Marcus sighed and set his glass down on the table.
"Because your house is completely bugged by the cartel," Marcus revealed.
"I had to warn Lily without the microphones picking up my voice."
Daniel shook his head, refusing to believe the crazy story.
"You are lying to cover your own tracks," Daniel accused.
Marcus stood up slowly and unbuttoned his dress shirt.
His entire torso was covered in dark purple bruises and fresh bandages.
"I have been trying to protect you from what Sarah stole," Marcus groaned.
Before Marcus could explain further, the glass window behind him shattered.
A red laser dot danced across Marcus's chest.
"Get down!" a familiar female voice screamed from the doorway.

It was Nora, and she was holding a massive sniper rifle.
She fired a single shot directly into the room.
