Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

Mark's triumphant smile instantly vanished as the dispatcher's voice echoed from Daniel's pocket.

"Suspects are located at Pier 43, all units move in immediately," the radio cracked loudly.

Daniel had pocket-dialed 911 the moment the truck had hit their SUV, leaving an open line the entire time.

Before Mark could issue a single command, the massive metal doors of the warehouse blew open.

Blinding spotlights flooded the dark building as a dozen police cruisers swarmed the entrances.

SWAT officers poured out of the vehicles, raising their assault rifles with absolute precision.

"Drop your weapons immediately and get on the ground!" the lead officer roared through a bullhorn.

The mercenaries realized they were completely surrounded and immediately dropped their guns.

Mark panicked, clutching the signed documents against his chest as he backed away toward the rear exit.

Evelyn, desperate and furious, grabbed Lily by the arm and dragged the screaming child toward a metal staircase.

"Stay back, or I will drop her into the river!" Evelyn shrieked, climbing toward the high catwalk.

Daniel didn't wait for the police to negotiate with the desperate imposter.

He sprinted toward the staircase, ignoring the agonizing pain radiating through his bruised ribs.

Evelyn reached the rusted catwalk high above the churning, freezing water of the river below.

She held Lily over the railing, her eyes wild with complete madness.

"I won't go to prison for you people!" Evelyn screamed, swaying dangerously near the edge.

Daniel reached the top of the stairs, holding both hands up in a placating gesture.

"Take me instead, Evelyn, let the little girl go," Daniel begged softly, stepping closer.

"Don't come any closer!" she warned, stepping backward on the slippery metal grate.

The rusted metal suddenly groaned under her weight, snapping loose from the old support beam.

Evelyn lost her balance entirely, slipping backward toward the dark abyss of the river.

She let go of Lily's arm to try and grab the railing to save herself.

Daniel dove forward with everything he had, grabbing Lily by the back of her shirt just as she fell.

Evelyn screamed as she plummeted over the edge, disappearing into the dark, rushing water below.

Daniel pulled his crying daughter up onto the safe platform, wrapping his arms around her tightly.

Down below, police tackled Mark to the ground, firmly placing heavy handcuffs onto his wrists.
