Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the Plaster

Daniel stared at the narrow metal door buried within the plaster of his own home.
The heavy hammer in his hand suddenly felt like a weapon.
Beside him, six-year-old Lily clung to his leg, her small body trembling with fear.
Vanessa stood frozen in the center of the hallway, her face entirely drained of color.
"What is this, Vanessa?" Daniel demanded, his voice echoing in the sudden silence.
She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
Then, the terrifying sound started again.
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
Someone was desperately banging on the inside of the metal door.
Daniel stepped forward, gripping the handle, but it was locked tight with a heavy digital padlock.
"Daniel, don't!" Vanessa screamed, lunging forward to grab his arm.
"Get off of me!" Daniel yelled, shoving her away so hard she stumbled into the wall.
He raised the hammer high above his head.
With a massive swing, he smashed the heavy steel head of the hammer directly into the padlock.
Sparks flew across the dark hallway.
He swung again, putting every ounce of his strength into the blow.
The metal lock shattered, falling to the wooden floor with a heavy clang.
Vanessa fell to her knees, covering her face as she began to sob uncontrollably.
Daniel took a deep breath, grabbed the iron handle, and pulled the heavy door open.
A wave of cold, stale air rushed out from the darkness inside.
Daniel reached into his pocket and turned on his phone's flashlight.
He pointed the beam of light into the tiny, concrete room.
Sitting in the corner was a woman in a ragged nightgown, shielding her eyes from the sudden brightness.
Daniel's heart stopped completely in his chest.
The woman slowly lowered her hands, revealing a face he had buried three years ago.
It was Sarah, his first wife, and Lily's biological mother.

But before Daniel could even process the impossible truth, Sarah pointed a shaking finger directly at him.
"Why did you do this to me?" she whispered, her voice filled with absolute terror.
