Chapter 6 - The Sniper's Warning

Daniel instantly threw himself off Evelyn and rolled onto the floor as a bullet shattered the motel window.
Glass rained down onto the carpet as the silenced shot buried itself into the wall behind him.
Evelyn scrambled to her feet, laughing breathlessly as she brushed herself off.
"Mark doesn't leave loose ends, Daniel," she taunted, stepping carefully out of the sniper's line of sight.
Daniel crawled behind the thick mattress, knowing he couldn't reach the bathroom without exposing himself to the window.
"If Mark wanted me dead, he would have killed me at the house," Daniel yelled from the floor.
Evelyn reached under the bed, retrieving her dropped pistol with a smug grin.
"He couldn't kill you until you signed the transfer papers for the offshore accounts," Evelyn explained.
"But now that you're a wanted murderer on the run, he can easily forge your signature."
Daniel's mind raced as he realized the true depth of Mark's sinister plan.
Mark had killed the real Vanessa, planted Evelyn to frame Daniel, and kept Sarah alive as a backup hostage.
"He wants the company and the entire estate," Daniel muttered to himself.
Evelyn aimed her gun at the closed bathroom door.
"Come out, Sarah, or I start shooting through the wood!" Evelyn shouted.
Daniel felt a surge of desperate panic as Lily whimpered from the other side of the door.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pocket knife he always carried for work.
It was a pathetic weapon against guns, but it was all he had left.
"Don't you touch them!" Daniel screamed, lunging from behind the bed.
He slashed the knife across Evelyn's thigh, causing her to shriek in agony and drop to one knee.
She fired a wild shot that missed him by inches, tearing through the cheap ceiling.
Daniel grabbed Evelyn by the collar and hurled her forcefully through the broken window.
She crashed onto the wet concrete of the walkway outside, groaning in pain as the rain poured over her.
Daniel quickly grabbed his phone from the floor, only to see an incoming video call from Mark.
He answered it, and Mark's smiling face filled the screen.

"I have a surprise for you, old friend," Mark said smoothly.
The camera flipped to show Mark standing inside Daniel's house, holding a lit match over a massive puddle of gasoline.
