Chapter 8 - The Hostage Exchange

The deafening sound of crunching metal filled the air as the SUV spun violently across the wet asphalt.

Daniel fought the steering wheel, desperately trying to keep the vehicle from flipping over completely.

The SUV finally slammed into a concrete barrier, shattering the passenger side window and deploying the airbags.

White smoke filled the cabin as Daniel desperately checked the backseat.

"Lily, are you okay?" Daniel coughed, unbuckling his seatbelt.

"I'm okay, Daddy," Lily whimpered softly, perfectly protected by her car seat.

Before Daniel could check on Sarah, the doors of the black truck swung open.

Four heavily armed men wearing tactical gear marched through the rain toward the wrecked SUV.

They smashed the remaining windows and dragged Daniel out onto the cold street.

One of the mercenaries pulled Sarah and Lily from the wreckage, holding them tightly by the arms.

"Bring them all," a familiar voice commanded from the shadows of the alleyway.

Mark stepped forward, holding an umbrella over his expensive tailored suit.

"You really made me work for this, Daniel," Mark sighed, looking disappointed.

"Let them go, Mark, you have the company now," Daniel pleaded, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead.

"I can't let them go, Daniel, because dead men can't testify," Mark said with a cruel smile.

The mercenaries shoved the family into the back of a large armored van.

They drove for twenty agonizing minutes before arriving at the abandoned shipping docks by the river.

The men dragged Daniel, Sarah, and Lily into a massive, empty warehouse smelling of rust and salt water.

Mark pulled a heavy folding table into the center of the room, placing a stack of legal documents on top.

"Sign the final wealth transfer papers, and I promise I will make your deaths quick," Mark offered generously.

Evelyn suddenly stepped out from behind a stack of crates, limping heavily from her leg wound.

She aimed her pistol directly at Lily's tiny head.

"Sign the papers, Daniel, or I start with the kid," Evelyn threatened venomously.

Daniel picked up the pen with trembling hands, slowly signing his name on the dotted line.

Mark smiled triumphantly and picked up the documents to inspect the signature.

Daniel suddenly smirked, dropping the pen onto the concrete floor.

"You should have checked my pockets before you brought me here, Mark," Daniel whispered.

From inside Daniel's ruined jacket pocket, the loud, crackling voice of a police dispatcher echoed through the silent warehouse.
