Chapter 7 - The Desperate Ransom

Panic gripped my throat as I watched the digital oxygen levels slowly dropping on my son's monitor.

Dominic immediately ordered his men to prep the remaining armored vehicles for an emergency transport.

We could not go back to the main hospital because the rival Russian cartel was undoubtedly watching it.

Dominic decided to risk taking us to a highly secretive, underground mob doctor located on the docks.

We drove recklessly through the abandoned industrial district, praying the fragile incubator would hold together.

We finally arrived at a rusted warehouse that hid a state-of-the-art illegal surgical suite inside.

Dominic kicked the metal doors open, carrying the failing incubator into the sterile medical room.

The underground doctor was standing perfectly still, his hands raised in the air while sweat poured down his face.

Sitting on the medical examination table was a small, blinking explosive device strapped to the oxygen reserves.

The doctor’s cell phone rang loudly, breaking the terrifying silence of the room.

Dominic answered the phone, putting it on speaker for everyone to hear the cruel voice on the other end.

Mark laughed through the static, bragging that he had anticipated Dominic’s backup plan perfectly.

He demanded that Dominic walk out to the edge of the pier alone and unarmed.

If Dominic refused to surrender his life, Mark promised to detonate the bomb and kill the underground doctor.

Dominic looked at me, a profound sadness softening his sharp, dangerous features.

He gently kissed the top of my forehead, promising that my babies would live a beautiful life.

He turned his back and walked toward the exit, fully prepared to die for a family he barely knew.

I refused to let another man die because of my husband's monstrous greed.

I quietly pulled a heavy pistol from the belt of a distracted guard and slipped out the back door into the shadows.
