Chapter 5 - The Russian Deal

I gasped in sheer horror, unable to comprehend how Mark had bypassed the fortress security.
Mark looked at me and laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that echoed off the high marble ceilings.
He casually admitted that he never actually boarded a flight to Cabo.
The text message was just a calculated distraction to buy him enough time to execute his true plan.
Mark had sold the intricate blueprints of Dominic’s fortress to a rival Russian crime syndicate.
The Russians had helped him sneak into the estate to capture Dominic’s sister while the mafia boss was at the hospital.
Dominic stood perfectly still, his face an emotionless mask of cold, calculating rage.
Mark demanded that Dominic sign over the deeds to all his legitimate businesses and illegal territories.
If the mafia boss refused, Mark promised to execute the innocent woman sitting on the couch.
I begged Mark to stop this madness, reminding him of the life we had once built together.
Mark spat on the marble floor, declaring that I was nothing more than a pathetic incubator for his extortion scheme.
Dominic slowly placed his weapon on the ground, raising his hands in a gesture of fake surrender.
Mark smiled triumphantly, enjoying the rare sight of the feared mafia kingpin submitting to him.
He pulled the hammer back on the silver revolver, aiming it directly at Dominic’s chest.
“I think I will just take your empire and your life,” Mark sneered as he pulled the trigger.
A loud, hollow click echoed through the silent room.
The gun was completely empty.
Mark did not look surprised or panicked by the mechanical failure.

Instead, he pulled a small black remote detonator from his coat pocket and smiled wickedly.
“I always have a backup plan,” Mark whispered as he pressed the red button.
