Chapter 1 - The Final Message

The agonizing pain ripped through my swollen abdomen like a jagged, unforgiving knife.

I gasped for air as I dropped my cell phone onto the cold bathroom tiles.

Blood was already running down my bare legs, pooling terribly on the white ceramic floor.

My vision blurred rapidly as I stared down at the glowing screen of my phone.

My husband’s final text message sat there like a cruel, sick joke.

“Getting married in Cabo.

You’re on your own.”

I was exactly thirty-two weeks pregnant with twins, and the man I loved had just abandoned me to die.

My trembling fingers reached frantically for the banking application on my screen.

The page loaded slowly, but the terrible truth soon appeared in bright red numbers.

Every single joint account we shared had been completely drained down to zero.

Mark had stripped me of my money, my dignity, and my entire future in a single afternoon.

Another terrifying wave of contractions hit my stomach, forcing a loud scream from my burning lungs.

I crawled desperately toward the bathroom door, dragging my heavy body across the hardwood floor.

I managed to dial the emergency emergency number right before my vision started to turn completely black.

The distant sound of wailing sirens eventually cut through the terrifying silence of my empty suburban house.

Paramedics broke down my front door, shouting urgent medical commands as they lifted me onto a stretcher.

The entire ambulance ride was a terrifying blur of flashing red lights and screaming heart monitors.

I was bleeding out, and the fragile lives of my two unborn babies were fading rapidly.

We crashed through the emergency room doors, surrounded by a chaotic swarm of frantic trauma nurses.

I felt my hospital bed rolling aggressively down the sterile white hallway toward the surgical wing.

Suddenly, the chaotic shouting of the medical staff went entirely silent.

Through my half-open eyes, I saw a massive wall of men in tailored black suits blocking the operating room doors.

The armed hospital security guards were backing away into the corners in sheer terror.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped forward from the center of the dark crowd.

He was Dominic Russo, the most ruthless and feared mafia boss in the entire city of Boston.

Dominic looked down at my bleeding body with eyes as cold and dangerous as shattered ice.

He turned his terrifying gaze toward the trembling chief of surgery.

“If anything happens to this woman or my heirs, I will burn this hospital to the ground.”

I lost consciousness completely, wondering why the devil himself was claiming my unborn children.
