Chapter 6 - The Rubble

A deafening explosion ripped through the entire west wing of the massive stone mansion.
The sheer force of the blast shattered every window and sent me flying backward through the air.
Dominic dove across the room, wrapping his massive body around mine just before the ceiling collapsed.
Tons of heavy concrete, shattered wood, and broken marble rained down upon us in a suffocating wave of destruction.
Complete darkness consumed my vision as the deafening roar of the collapsing mansion faded into a ringing silence.
I coughed violently, choking on the thick, toxic dust that filled our tiny pocket of breathable air.
Dominic groaned in agony, his back bearing the immense weight of a fallen structural beam.
I realized with terrifying clarity that this ruthless mafia boss had just sacrificed his own body to shield me from death.
I reached out in the dark, my trembling fingers finding his blood-soaked shirt.
Dominic forced a weak, ragged breath and asked if I was injured.
I cried quietly, overwhelmed by the impossible reality that this dangerous criminal was the only person truly protecting me.
In the suffocating darkness, Dominic confessed that he had spent his entire life destroying families to build his empire.
He whispered that my children were his only chance at leaving behind a legacy of life instead of death.
We spent hours digging furiously through the jagged rocks, our hands bleeding and our muscles burning with exhaustion.
A faint sliver of moonlight finally pierced through the rubble, giving us the strength to push the final boulder away.
We dragged ourselves out of the ruins, gasping for the freezing night air as we surveyed the destroyed estate.
Dominic’s surviving guards were already rushing toward us with medical supplies and flashlights.
They led us to the fortified underground bunker where the twins had been safely hidden before the blast.
I wept with joy as I saw my tiny babies breathing steadily inside their mobile incubators.
My joy was instantly shattered when the private doctor checked the digital monitors.

The explosion had damaged the primary oxygen regulator on one of the incubators.
“The machine is failing, and the boy will suffocate in less than two hours,” the doctor announced grimly.
