Chapter 6 - The Breach

The blaring security alarm echoed violently through the quiet halls of the private medical facility.
Emily leaped to her feet, completely ignoring the sharp pain radiating from her fresh surgical incision.
Julian immediately drew a concealed firearm from his jacket and stepped defensively in front of the nursery door.
He ordered Emily to lock herself inside with the babies and absolutely not open it for anyone.
Emily rushed into the NICU, her hands trembling as she secured the heavy steel deadbolt.
She watched through the reinforced glass as Julian sprinted bravely down the pristine white hallway.
Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed from the stairwell, signaling that the intruders were moving incredibly fast.
Emily positioned herself between the door and the fragile incubators, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole as a weapon.
She swore to herself she would die before she let anyone touch Grace, Lily, or Hope.
Outside the room, Julian crept carefully toward the corner, his weapon raised and steady.
Two men dressed in black tactical gear breached the hallway, holding advanced suppressed pistols.
They were professional mercenaries, completely out of place in this suburban drama.
Julian fired two warning shots into the ceiling, demanding they drop their weapons immediately.
Instead of surrendering, the mercenaries returned fire, shattering the glass windows all along the corridor.
Julian dove safely behind a massive reception desk as bullets rained down around him.
He realized Madison must have used the last of her hidden funds to hire a desperate hit squad.
She needed Emily permanently erased before the police figured out the murder frame-up was entirely fake.
Inside the nursery, Emily heard the terrifying, deafening sound of sustained gunfire.
Her babies began to cry loudly, their tiny monitors flashing red with sudden distress.
She sang softly to them, trying desperately to drown out the violence exploding just outside their door.
Suddenly, the gunfire abruptly stopped, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in the building.
Emily held her breath, raising the metal pole as a dark shadow fell over the frosted glass of her door.
Someone slowly jiggled the handle, aggressively testing the locked deadbolt.
A deep, unfamiliar voice called out to her through the heavy wooden door.
May you like
The man coldly announced that Julian was bleeding out on the hallway floor.
He told Emily she had exactly ten seconds to open the door, or he would blow it off its hinges with explosives.
