Chapter 5 - The Confession

The prison guard miraculously turned the corner just as the inmate lunged toward Mark with the shiv.
The attacker hesitated, dropping the blade to the floor and quickly blending back into the crowded cell block.
Mark scrambled backward against the cold concrete wall, his heart hammering violently against his ribs.
Madison was actually trying to have him assassinated in prison to ensure his permanent silence.
He realized she had framed him for Emily's disappearance to protect herself from the massive financial fraud fallout.
He screamed for the guards, demanding to speak to the lead detective immediately.
Within an hour, Mark was sitting safely back in the bright interrogation room.
He promised the detective he would confess to the massive corporate embezzlement if they gave him immediate police protection.
He also eagerly offered to hand over all the digital evidence proving Madison was his co-conspirator.
The detective leaned back in his chair and silently turned on a digital recording device.
Mark spilled absolutely everything, detailing how he and Madison had stolen millions from investors over five years.
He thought he was being incredibly smart by throwing his mistress under the bus to save his own life.
The detective took careful, methodical notes, his face completely unreadable.
When Mark finally finished his frantic confession, he asked when he would be released on protective custody.
The detective smiled coldly and reached over to turn off the recorder.
He informed Mark that the embezzlement confession was extremely helpful for the federal agents.
However, it did absolutely nothing to clear him of his wife's suspected murder.
In fact, the police crime scene unit had just found a crucial new piece of evidence.
They had recovered a bloody shovel with Mark's perfect fingerprints on it buried in the woods behind his house.
Mark gasped for air, realizing Madison had been planning this elaborate setup for months.
Meanwhile, Emily and Julian were comfortably reviewing the leaked security footage of Mark's confession.
Julian had paid off a mole inside the police department to secure the tapes directly from the precinct.
Emily watched her husband trade his dignity for a plea deal without a shred of remorse.
She asked Julian if it was finally time to reveal to the world that she was still alive.
Julian shook his head and pulled a thick, official legal document from his leather briefcase.
He said there was one more thing they needed to take from Mark before he was completely ruined.
Julian handed Emily a pen and pointed to the bottom signature line.
By signing this paper, Emily would legally take ownership of Madison's secret offshore bank account.
Emily signed her name with a fierce, unapologetic stroke of the pen.

Suddenly, Julian's burner phone rang with a terrifying, high-pitched security alert.
Someone had just forcibly bypassed their private hospital's heavily armed security gate.
