Chapter 1 - The Empty Room

Mark stood frozen in the center of the sterile maternity ward.
The nurse’s words echoed in his head like a cruel, twisted joke.
She left four days ago.
He looked at the unmade bed, the neatly folded hospital gown, and the dying flowers on the windowsill.
How could a woman who just had a traumatic C-section simply vanish without a trace?
He grabbed the nurse by her shoulders, his fingers digging frantically into her scrubs.
He demanded to know exactly where his wife and his three newborn babies were.
The nurse slapped his hands away and immediately threatened to call hospital security.
She informed him that Emily had discharged herself against medical advice and signed a strict privacy waiver.
Absolutely no one in the building was legally allowed to give him any information about her or the triplets.
Mark stumbled backward into the hallway, pulling out his phone to call Madison.
The line rang endlessly before going straight to a generic voicemail box.
Panic clawed at his throat as he rushed out of the hospital and drove recklessly toward his suburban home.
He burst through the front door, shouting Emily’s name into the dark, silent hallway.
The house felt like a tomb.
He ran upstairs to the nursery, expecting to see the three expensive cribs waiting for his children.
The room had been completely stripped bare.
There were no cribs, no baby clothes, no monitors, and no trace that a family had ever lived there.
It was as if his entire future had been erased from existence in the blink of an eye.
He backed out of the room, his chest heaving, and tripped over a small metal trash can in the hallway.
As the garbage spilled onto the polished hardwood floor, a bloody hospital bracelet caught his eye.
Mark dropped to his knees and picked it up with trembling hands.
He wiped away the dried blood with his thumb to read the printed patient name.
May you like
His breath caught sharply in his throat.
The name on the bloody maternity bracelet was not Emily's.
