Chapter 9 - The Sacrifice

Vincenzo Romano let out a dark, booming laugh that echoed terrifyingly off the high metal ceiling of the warehouse.
He had finally forced the legendary, completely untouchable David Carter to bow before him in utter, humiliating defeat.
"I am going to thoroughly enjoy watching you die, Carter," Vincenzo mocked, slowly cocking the heavy hammer of his massive silver revolver.
"Take my entire territory, take my life, but let the innocent child walk safely away," David pleaded, his voice remarkably steady despite his impending execution.
Vincenzo smiled wickedly, completely ignoring the honorable mafia code that explicitly forbade aggressively targeting innocent children.
"I think I will actually kill her first, just so you can feel exactly what true despair feels like," Vincenzo whispered incredibly cruelly.
My heart shattered entirely into a million tiny pieces as Vincenzo shifted his deadly aim directly toward Chloe's terrified face.
I knew I had absolutely nothing left to lose, and my powerful maternal instinct entirely took over my rational mind.
I quickly raised the small handgun David had given me and aggressively charged forward from the dark shadows.
I didn't even bother to aim properly before pulling the trigger rapidly, sending three loud shots echoing through the massive warehouse.
My desperate bullets missed Vincenzo entirely, but they successfully shattered a massive overhead halogen light bulb directly above his head.
The sudden, loud explosion of bright glass and terrifying noise caused Vincenzo to instinctively flinch and step backward.
That single, microscopic second of complete distraction was the only violent opening David Carter ever needed to survive.
David lunged fiercely forward like a vicious, wounded tiger, completely ignoring the agonizing pain tearing through his newly opened surgical wounds.
He tackled Vincenzo violently to the hard concrete floor, aggressively wrestling for total control of the massive silver revolver.
Chloe screamed loudly and ran directly toward me, and I pulled her desperately behind a stack of massive wooden shipping crates.
The deafening sound of a single, terrible gunshot suddenly rang out, echoing terribly through the vast industrial space.
Both men completely stopped moving, lying incredibly still on the cold, blood-stained concrete floor.
I held my breath in absolute terror, frantically praying that David had somehow miraculously survived the deadly struggle.
Slowly, a massive, towering figure stood up from the dark shadows, clutching a smoking weapon tightly in his hand.
It was Vincenzo Romano, and he was completely and entirely unharmed.

He raised his heavy weapon, locked eyes directly with me, and aimed the cold metal barrel straight at my chest.
Vincenzo smiled triumphantly and slowly pulled the heavy trigger.
