Chapter 5 - The Escape

David hit the cold concrete floor with a heavy, incredibly sickening thud.
A fresh pool of dark crimson blood immediately began to spread across the front of his white hospital gown.
I screamed his name in absolute terror, dropping instantly to my knees beside his massive, bleeding body.
Before the Romano hitman could chamber another deadly round, a loud gunshot echoed perfectly from the stairwell behind us.
Silas stepped confidently into the dim basement light, his smoking pistol aimed perfectly at the assassin’s head.
The hitman collapsed instantly, completely neutralizing the immediate and terrifying threat to our innocent lives.
Silas rushed aggressively over to us, cursing loudly as he inspected the massive bullet wound on David's chest.
"The bullet completely missed his heart, but we need to move him right now before he bleeds out," Silas ordered frantically.
David coughed up a terrifying amount of blood, but he somehow managed to fiercely force his eyes open.
His intense blue gaze locked directly onto Chloe, checking desperately to ensure she was entirely unharmed.
"I am fine, David," I sobbed, pressing my hands firmly against his bleeding chest to apply desperate pressure.
"Get them to the secure safe house in the Gold Coast immediately," David rasped, his voice incredibly weak but highly commanding.
Silas practically carried David’s massive frame completely over his shoulder as we navigated the dark, winding underground tunnels.
We finally emerged into a hidden parking garage where a heavily armored black SUV was waiting silently in the dark shadows.
I shoved Chloe into the backseat and climbed in right beside her, while Silas violently threw the massive vehicle into gear.
We sped recklessly out of the hospital garage, violently smashing through a wooden toll barrier as police sirens wailed endlessly in the distance.
The chaotic streets of Chicago blurred rapidly past the tinted windows as we raced toward the highly secure mafia safe house.
When we finally arrived at the heavily fortified mansion, a team of private underground doctors was already waiting for us.
They quickly placed David on a stainless steel medical table and began frantically working to successfully extract the dangerous bullet.
I sat nervously on a velvet couch in the corner of the massive room, holding Chloe tightly against my chest.
Hours passed in agonizing silence until the lead doctor finally approached me with a highly exhausted, serious expression.
"He is going to survive the night, but he is fiercely demanding to speak with you immediately," the doctor stated quietly.
I slowly walked into the makeshift medical room, my hands shaking violently with a complex mixture of fear and profound relief.
David was sitting up slightly against a pile of pillows, his bare chest heavily wrapped in thick white bandages.
He looked at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated possessiveness that sent a chilling shiver down my spine.

"You are never leaving my sight again, Natasha," he promised in a dangerously low, terrifying whisper.
But his terrifying promise was suddenly interrupted as the mansion's massive security alarms began to blare deafeningly throughout the entire house.
