Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Before Vincenzo’s deadly bullet could even leave the chamber, a devastating spray of automatic gunfire completely shattered the warehouse silence.
Silas and his elite strike team aggressively breached the glass skylights, raining precise, deadly fire directly down upon the Romano boss.
Vincenzo collapsed lifelessly to the cold concrete floor, his terrible reign of violent terror entirely and permanently finished.
I frantically rushed over to David, incredibly relieved to miraculously discover that he had intentionally played dead to give his loyal men the perfect tactical advantage.
He slowly sat up, completely exhausted but smiling incredibly warmly as I threw my shaking arms around his massive neck.
The rest of the Romano crime family surrendered immediately, officially recognizing the absolute, undeniable dominance of the Carter empire.
However, sitting heavily on that cold warehouse floor, David made a shocking decision that would permanently change our lives forever.
He formally announced to his highly loyal men that he was permanently stepping down as the head of the mafia.
He officially handed total, absolute control of his vast criminal empire to Silas, completely walking away from the dangerous underworld.
David looked deeply into my eyes and sincerely promised that he was choosing to be a real father and a completely devoted partner.
Six months later, we were happily unpacking moving boxes in a beautiful, highly secure estate in the quiet, peaceful suburbs of Colorado.
David was happily outside in the bright sunshine, completely healed and joyfully pushing Chloe on an old wooden tire swing.
I smiled warmly as I watched them, finally feeling entirely safe and completely free from the terrifying, dark shadows of Chicago.
I walked cheerfully into Chloe’s brightly colored new bedroom to help her properly organize her collection of art supplies and toys.
I unzipped her familiar school backpack to lovingly take out her favorite, heavily folded drawing of a purple horse.
As I pulled the paper out, a heavy, incredibly cold metallic object accidentally tumbled out and hit the hardwood floor.
It was a shiny, heavily loaded silver pistol that Chloe had somehow secretly taken from Vincenzo Romano during the warehouse fight.

Chloe walked quietly into the bedroom, completely ignoring the terrifying weapon lying dangerously on the floor.
She looked up at me and smiled a remarkably cold, deeply calculating smile that looked exactly like her father's.
