Chapter 1 - The Lockdown

Dr. Winters waited for my answer while the harsh fluorescent lights buzzed aggressively above our heads.
I looked down at Chloe, who was blissfully shading her drawing of a purple horse with a pink crayon.
The dangerous secret I had buried for eight long years was suddenly clawing its way up my throat.
If I lied now, the hospital protocol would require weeks of secondary testing that the dying man simply did not have.
I had to tell the truth if I wanted to save the terrifying mafia boss I once loved.
I took a deep breath, tasted the stale hospital air, and nodded slowly.
"Yes, David Carter is her biological father," I whispered, my voice trembling uncontrollably in the quiet waiting room.
Dr. Winters exhaled sharply and quickly closed the thick medical file in her trembling hands.
She promised to expedite the pediatric donation protocol and swore herself to strict medical confidentiality.
The next two hours were an agonizing blur of sterile needles, gentle pediatric nurses, and Chloe's remarkably brave little smiles.
My daughter sat perfectly still on the hospital bed as the machine collected the exact amount of blood needed.
She was literally giving pieces of her own life to pull the most dangerous man in Chicago back from the brink of death.
I held her small hand the entire time, praying that David would never find out where his miraculous salvation came from.
When the medical procedure was finally over, I quickly packed her backpack and prepared to run back to Madison immediately.
I handed the pediatric nurse a fake cash tip, desperately hoping it would buy us a few extra minutes of a head start.
I truly thought we had successfully cheated fate and avoided the violent criminal underworld entirely.
I held Chloe's hand tightly as we walked toward the main lobby elevators, my heart pounding with desperate relief.
But as the silver elevator doors slid open, a terrifying wave of absolute panic washed over me.
A dozen large men wearing tailored black suits and discreet earpieces flooded the hospital entrance.
The hospital went into an immediate, chaotic lockdown as the heavy glass doors were chained shut from the inside.
Panicked doctors and nurses were violently pushed aside as the mafia took complete control of the medical facility.
A tall man with a brutally scarred jaw stepped forward to address the terrified hospital staff.
He announced in a booming, dangerous voice that absolutely no one was leaving this building until the boss opened his eyes.
My blood ran completely cold because I recognized this terrifying enforcer instantly.
His name was Silas, and he was David Carter's incredibly ruthless right-hand man.
I tried to pull Chloe back into the elevator, desperately hitting the button to close the metal doors.
But Silas turned his cold, calculating gaze toward the sound of the mechanical elevator chime.

He locked eyes directly with me across the crowded, panicked lobby.
A wicked, knowing smile slowly spread across his scarred face as he started walking straight toward us.
