Chapter 2 - The Golden Child
The thick stack of cash scattered across the sterile paper covering the examination table.
Sarah arrogantly told the doctor that everyone had a price, and she was willing to pay generously for his absolute silence.
The doctor stared at the money with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
He pressed the emergency security button on the wall without saying a single word to her.
Sarah realized that her typical methods of intimidation and bribery were not going to work this time.
She turned her vicious glare toward me and stepped incredibly close to my injured side.
She whispered that if I did not retract my statement, she would personally ensure that my life became a living hell.
Two massive hospital security guards burst into the room and immediately grabbed Sarah by the shoulders.
She fought against their grip, screaming that she was a local celebrity and an elite athlete.
The guards dragged her out into the hallway just as two uniformed police officers arrived at the scene.
I gave my official statement to the officers while Mrs. Chen nodded along to confirm my terrifying story.
The police arrested Sarah right there in the hospital corridor and placed her in heavy steel handcuffs.
I watched through the doorway as they led my furious sister away toward the waiting squad cars.
For the first time in my entire life, I actually felt a tiny spark of genuine hope.
Mrs. Chen drove me back to her quiet house so I would not have to face my parents alone.
I fell asleep on her comfortable guest bed, exhausted by the trauma and the heavy pain medication.
I woke up the next morning to the sound of aggressive pounding on Mrs. Chen's front door.
I crept into the living room and peeked carefully through the front window blinds.
