Chapter 5 - A Mother's Heartbreak

I arrived at Ethan and Claire’s lavish suburban mansion with my lead security agent by my side.
Ethan opened the heavy oak door, looking completely exhausted and terrified of his own shadow.
I walked straight into the grand living room, where Claire was nervously pacing across the expensive rug.
“Did you pay them, Eleanor?” Claire asked eagerly, rushing toward me with fake desperation.
I ignored her completely and turned my attention to my broken son.
“Ethan, did you know that your wife forged your signature to borrow five million dollars from the mafia?” I asked.
Ethan’s face drained of all color, and he collapsed heavily onto the velvet sofa.
“I found out last week, Mom,” Ethan whispered, burying his face in his trembling hands.
“And instead of coming to me for help, you let her humiliate me at dinner to maintain her fake wealthy image?” I demanded.
Ethan looked up, tears streaming down his pale face.
“I was so ashamed that I had failed as a husband and a provider, I thought I could fix it myself,” he cried.
My heart shattered for the little boy I had raised, but I could not excuse his cowardly betrayal.
I turned to face Claire, who was slowly backing away toward the grand staircase.
“You are going to pack a single suitcase, leave this house, and sign divorce papers by midnight,” I commanded her.
Claire’s fake tears vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, incredibly malicious glare.
“I am not going anywhere, and you are going to give me ten million dollars right now,” Claire threatened.
“You have absolutely no leverage, Claire, your massive fraud is completely exposed,” I stated coldly.
Claire smiled a wicked, terrifying smile that made my stomach churn.
“I do have leverage, Eleanor, because you love your precious granddaughter more than anything in the world.”
She pulled a remote control from her pocket and pressed a button, turning on the large television in the room.

The screen displayed a live video feed of a dark, empty basement room.
“I pulled Lily out of preschool an hour ago, and she is currently sitting in a hidden location waiting for my call.”
