Chapter 1 - The Chef's Secret

At dinner, my daughter-in-law ordered lobster for everyone at the table except me.

Then she slid a glass of water toward my seat at the far end and smiled like she had done me a kindness.

“That will be enough for her,” Claire told the waiter.

I looked at my son, Ethan, waiting for him to defend the woman who had raised him alone.

He sat beside his wife beneath the crystal chandeliers, dressed in an expensive suit, staring down at his plate like he had heard nothing.

“Ethan?” I asked.

After a long pause, he answered quietly.

“Just accept it, Mom, and remember your place.”

I looked down at the ice water, realizing they had finally decided exactly who I was.

As the executive chef entered the dining room, I decided it was time for them to learn how wrong they were.

Chef Armand, a man known for his fiery temper and Michelin stars, walked directly past the mayor’s table.

He bypassed several famous actors and stopped entirely at the edge of our table.

Claire sat up straight, instantly adjusting her diamond necklace and preparing a flattering greeting.

Armand completely ignored her.

He turned toward the far end of the table, placed his hand over his heart, and bowed deeply to me.

“Madame Hayes, it is an absolute honor to have you in the main dining room tonight,” he said loudly.

The entire restaurant went dead silent as wealthy patrons turned their heads to stare at us.

Claire’s jaw dropped, and the fake smile instantly vanished from her perfectly contoured face.

“Armand, what is the meaning of this?” Claire’s father demanded with a confused scoff.

“You are addressing the sole owner of the Sterling Hospitality Group, the conglomerate that owns this restaurant and forty others,” Armand replied sharply.

Ethan choked on his expensive imported wine, his eyes widening in absolute shock.

“Mom, is this some kind of ridiculous joke?” Ethan stammered.

I looked at him with a perfectly calm, icy expression.

“I told you I worked in commercial kitchens, Ethan, I just never mentioned that I bought them all,” I said.

Claire quickly recovered her composure, her eyes flashing with a sudden, greedy light.

“Well, it does not matter anyway, because as her only son, Ethan is the sole heir to all of it,” Claire announced triumphantly.

Armand looked at Claire with a deep, pitying smirk.

“That would be true, ma'am, except Madame Hayes instructed her lawyers to completely write her son out of her will yesterday morning.”
