Chapter 2 - The Bill Comes Due

Claire’s parents stared at me with their mouths hanging open in sheer disbelief.
The wealthy couple who had just mocked working-class people suddenly looked entirely foolish.
“Eleanor, this is a massive misunderstanding, we are family,” Claire’s mother backtracked quickly.
I slowly picked up my glass of water and took a very deliberate, refreshing sip.
“You made my place in this family very clear tonight,” I replied smoothly.
I signaled for the waiter, who rushed over with a terrifying amount of respect.
“I will be paying for my glass of tap water, but the rest of the table will cover their own extravagant meals,” I instructed.
I pulled a solid black titanium credit card from my worn purse and handed it to the waiter.
Claire looked at her husband with absolute panic in her eyes.
“Ethan, do something, tell her to stop embarrassing us in public!” she hissed.
Ethan reached his hand across the table, his face flushed with deep shame.
“Mom, please, you cannot just abandon us with a thousand-dollar dinner bill,” he begged.
I stood up from my chair and smoothed the wrinkles from my simple navy dress.
“You allowed your wife to humiliate the woman who starved so you could eat,” I told him coldly.
I turned my back on my only son and walked out of the restaurant with my head held high.
The cool evening air felt incredibly liberating against my flushed skin.
Before I could reach my waiting private town car, I heard footsteps rushing behind me.
It was Claire’s father, Robert, panting heavily as he tried to catch his breath.
“Eleanor, wait, please do not leave yet,” Robert pleaded desperately.
I turned around, raising a skeptical eyebrow at the arrogant man.
“My logistics company is currently facing bankruptcy, and we applied for a massive bailout loan from Apex Equity,” he explained nervously.
“I am aware of your failing business, Robert,” I said calmly.
“I just realized you are the anonymous CEO of Apex Equity, which means you hold the power to save or destroy my entire legacy,” he admitted.

I smiled, stepping gracefully into the back of my luxurious town car.
“Your loan application was officially denied about ten seconds ago, Robert.”
