Chapter 8 - The Desperate Escape

My mother coldly ordered the two massive security guards to seize the ledgers and break both of my arms.

The guards stepped forward aggressively, cracking their knuckles and blocking my only path to the hallway.

My mother looked at me with absolute disgust, completely devoid of any maternal love or human compassion.

"You chose trailer trash over your own blood, and now you will rot in a prison cell for burglary," she sneered.

Before the first guard could even touch me, Mark let out a loud, primal scream of pure frustration and rage.

My brother violently shoved the massive guard directly into the heavy wooden bookshelf, sending hundreds of books crashing to the floor.

Mark aggressively swung the wooden stock of the unloaded shotgun, striking the second guard hard across the jaw.

"Run, Daniel! Get out of here right now!" Mark screamed at the absolute top of his lungs.

I didn't hesitate for a single fraction of a second.

I tightly clutched the heavy leather ledgers to my chest and violently dove headfirst through the ground-floor glass window.

The glass shattered into a million tiny pieces as I tumbled painfully out into the freezing, snow-covered garden.

I scrambled quickly to my feet, completely ignoring the sharp, stinging cuts on my arms and face.

I sprinted madly through the thick, snowy woods behind the massive estate, my lungs burning violently in the frigid night air.

I could hear the angry shouts of the recovering security guards echoing loudly behind me, their bright flashlights cutting through the dark trees.

I pushed my body to its absolute physical limit, finally bursting out of the tree line onto the quiet suburban street.

Arthur’s rusty sedan was waiting exactly where we had planned, the engine idling warmly in the dark.

I dove into the passenger seat, screaming at the elderly lawyer to hit the gas pedal immediately.

Arthur slammed the car into drive, and we sped recklessly away from the nightmare of my childhood home.

As my racing heart finally began to slow down, I opened the oldest ledger to the very final page.

I gasped in absolute shock as I read the final handwritten entry, realizing that the charity fraud was only the beginning of my mother's lies.
