Chapter 1 - The Morning Call

The ringing of my cell phone shattered the quiet winter morning.
I stared at the glowing screen, watching my mother’s name flash repeatedly.
Emily sat across the kitchen island, her hands wrapped tightly around a warm mug of coffee.
The red mark on her cheek had faded into a dull, yellowish bruise, but the emotional damage was still painfully visible.
I finally answered the call and pressed the phone to my ear.
My mother immediately started crying.
She sounded fragile and heartbroken, exactly like the woman I used to comfort after my father passed away.
"Daniel, please come back to the house," she sobbed into the receiver.
I kept my voice completely flat and emotionless.
"Are you calling to apologize to my wife?" I asked.
The crying stopped instantly.
The sudden, chilling silence on the other end of the line proved everything I needed to know.
"She provoked your sister-in-law, Daniel, and she deserved to be put in her place," my mother said coldly.
I did not raise my voice, but my grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles turned white.
"Do not ever contact us again," I told her.
I ended the call and placed the phone face down on the granite countertop.
Emily reached across the island and gently covered my trembling hand with hers.
Before either of us could say another word, a sharp knock echoed from our front door.
I walked into the living room and opened the door to find a man in a cheap suit holding a thick manila envelope.
He asked to confirm my identity, shoved the envelope against my chest, and walked away through the snow.

I tore open the seal and pulled out a stack of heavily stamped legal documents.
My mother was officially suing us for emergency, full-time custody of our daughter.
