Chapter 5 - The Hidden Ally
Emily lay curled on the living room floor, her eyes completely vacant and hollow from the trauma of losing Lily.
I knelt beside her, gently stroking her hair while making a silent, absolute vow to burn my family's empire to the ground.
I realized that we could not win this war by playing fair against people who owned the entire system.
We desperately needed a legal shark who was utterly immune to my mother’s money and Vanessa’s toxic influence.
I suddenly remembered a man named Arthur Vance, my late father’s former business partner and oldest friend.
Arthur was a brilliant, highly ruthless attorney who had suffered a massive falling out with my mother after my father’s funeral.
I helped Emily into the passenger seat of my car and drove directly to Arthur’s dusty, isolated law office across town.
We walked into the dimly lit room and found the elderly man sitting behind a massive desk stacked with heavy legal volumes.
I quickly explained everything that had happened since the catastrophic Christmas dinner, holding nothing back.
Arthur listened silently, his sharp eyes narrowing with a deep, familiar hatred as I mentioned my mother’s name.
"Margaret has always been a venomous snake, but stealing a child crosses every conceivable line," Arthur growled.
He immediately agreed to take our case completely pro bono, eager for a chance to finally destroy the woman he despised.
Arthur made three rapid phone calls to private investigators he heavily trusted in the financial sector.
Within an hour, his ancient fax machine began spitting out dozens of redacted, highly confidential banking records.
Arthur reviewed the documents carefully, a dark, victorious smile slowly spreading across his wrinkled face.

He looked up at us and declared that my mother’s massive fortune was a complete and utter illusion.
She had been systematically embezzling millions of dollars from a charity fund my father had established specifically for disabled veterans.
