Chapter 2 - The Financial Trap

I read the legal documents three times, completely unable to process the absolute absurdity of the situation.

My mother and Vanessa were maliciously accusing Emily of being an unstable, violent, and highly unfit parent.

I immediately grabbed my coat and drove straight to my family lawyer’s office in the center of town.

Mr. Henderson had represented my father for decades, and I foolishly assumed he would protect me.

I threw the custody papers onto his polished mahogany desk and demanded that he file an immediate dismissal.

Mr. Henderson refused to look me in the eye as he nervously adjusted his expensive silk tie.

"I cannot represent you, Daniel, because your mother placed me on a permanent retainer this morning," he mumbled.

I realized with absolute horror that my family was systematically cutting off every single resource I had.

I stormed out of the office and pulled out my phone to check our joint savings accounts.

The digital banking app loaded slowly, finally displaying a terrifying, bold red number.

Every single bank account connected to Emily’s small bakery business had been completely frozen.

My mother had aggressively leveraged a loan she co-signed for us five years ago to lock our assets.

We were officially broke, legally cornered, and completely isolated from any professional help.

My phone vibrated in my hand with a text message from my older brother, Mark.

He begged me to meet him at an old diner on the edge of town, promising that he wanted to help us fight back.

I drove to the diner with a tiny spark of hope, praying that my brother had finally found his courage.

I walked into the empty restaurant and headed straight for the corner booth in the back.

Mark was not sitting there.

Vanessa was waiting for me instead, sipping a black coffee with a predatory, victorious smile on her face.
