Chapter 3 - The Sister-in-Law's Bargain

Vanessa casually stirred her coffee, completely unfazed by the absolute fury radiating from my entire body.

I demanded to know where my brother was and why he had sent his venomous wife in his place.

"Mark is far too weak to handle adult business, so he stayed home with the kids," she said smoothly.

I turned around to leave, refusing to spend another second breathing the same air as this monster.

"Walk away, and child protective services will take Lily from your home by dinner time," Vanessa warned.

I froze in my tracks, slowly turning back to face the woman who was trying to destroy my family.

I sat down across from her and told her to name her exact price to make this nightmare stop.

Vanessa smiled her perfect, incredibly expensive smile and slid a thin folder across the table.

She told me that she would immediately drop the custody suit and unfreeze Emily’s bakery accounts.

All I had to do was sign the divorce papers inside the folder and leave Emily with absolutely nothing.

"She will always be trailer trash, Daniel, but you can still salvage your reputation," Vanessa sneered.

I grabbed the folder, ripped the divorce papers into tiny shreds, and threw them directly into her face.

I told her she was a miserable, wicked woman who would never understand what true love actually looked like.

Vanessa casually brushed the torn paper off her designer coat and sighed in mock disappointment.

"I tried to do this the easy way, but you leave me no choice," she said coldly.

She pulled a second envelope from her purse and tossed it onto the diner table.

I opened it carefully and felt my blood run completely ice cold.

The envelope contained highly convincing, doctored photographs showing Emily supposedly striking our daughter.
