Chapter 4 - The Social Worker

I sprinted to my car and drove recklessly through the icy streets to get back to my house.

I burst through the front door, desperately screaming for Emily and Lily.

A sleek, black government vehicle was already parked aggressively in my snowy driveway.

I ran into the living room and found Emily sitting rigidly on the edge of the sofa.

Lily was crying softly in her arms, burying her face into Emily’s red Christmas sweater.

A stern woman with a clipboard and a cold demeanor was standing in the center of the room.

She officially introduced herself as a senior investigator for the state child protective services division.

I demanded that she leave my house immediately, threatening to call the police on her for trespassing.

The investigator calmly pulled out the exact same doctored photographs that Vanessa had shown me at the diner.

She aggressively asked Emily to explain the massive, dark bruises covering Lily’s arms in the pictures.

Emily sobbed and frantically explained that the photos were completely fake and heavily edited by my sister-in-law.

I told the investigator that my family was wealthy, vindictive, and currently trying to ruin our lives over a dinner argument.

The woman wrote something down on her clipboard without showing a single ounce of empathy or understanding.

"Due to the severity of these images, I am mandated to place the child in temporary protective care," she announced.

My heart shattered into a million pieces as two uniformed police officers suddenly stepped into the hallway.

They physically separated Emily from our screaming daughter, dragging Lily out the front door into the snow.

Emily collapsed onto the hardwood floor, wailing in a kind of agony that words can never accurately describe.

I looked desperately at the social worker, begging her to see reason.

As the woman turned to leave, her winter scarf slipped slightly down her neck.

I saw a highly distinctive, custom gold necklace that I instantly recognized from my brother's wedding photos.

The social worker was Vanessa’s biological sister.
