Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

James slowly lowered his weapon, completely unwilling to risk a chaotic crossfire with my mother in the room.
Lauren laughed triumphantly and tossed the heavy encrypted laptop directly onto the ruined bed.
"You really thought a stupid dinner argument was about the baby?" Lauren mocked maliciously.
She revealed that she had despised me our entire lives, constantly jealous of my perfect marriage and happiness.
Greg had easily manipulated her bitter jealousy, promising her millions of dollars to steal the military intelligence.
"I am completely drowning in terrible debt, and this drive is my only ticket out," Lauren confessed proudly.
Greg shoved my weeping mother aggressively to the floor and pulled a small cable from his pocket.
"Unlock the primary firewall right now, Captain," Greg demanded, connecting the laptop to his hacking device.
James stared at them with cold, calculated eyes, completely refusing to move a single muscle.
Lauren aggressively cocked the hammer of her pistol and pointed it straight at my dark hiding spot.
"Type in the password, or I start shooting into the panic room," she threatened wildly.
James immediately stepped forward, shielding the cracked door entirely with his own broad body.
He placed his hands on the keyboard and quickly typed a long, highly complex military passcode.
The bright screen unlocked, displaying massive folders of highly classified federal operations.
Greg smiled greedily, leaning incredibly close to the screen to verify the stolen intelligence.
But instead of downloading the files, the entire screen suddenly flashed a brilliant, blinding red.

A loud, synthesized robotic voice echoed clearly from the laptop speakers.
"Lethal countermeasures activated, detonation in exactly ten seconds," the computer announced calmly.
