Chapter 6 - The Hostage

My entire body violently trembled as I listened to my mother's terrified screams.

I reached for the heavy steel handle of the panic room, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face.

I could not simply hide in the dark while these monsters brutally murdered my parents.

Before I could unlock the heavy deadbolt, the sound of a violent struggle erupted in the bedroom.

I heard the distinct, sickening thud of a body crashing heavily against the hardwood floor.

"Drop the weapon right now, Greg!" James roared with absolute, commanding fury.

The electric drill stopped whining, and a terrifyingly tense silence fell over the entire house.

I slowly pushed the heavy steel door open just a tiny crack to see into the bedroom.

James was standing tall in the shadows, aiming his tactical weapon directly at a tall, scarred man.

Greg was holding a massive hunting knife directly against my mother's fragile throat.

My father was lying unconscious on the carpet, bleeding heavily from a severe head wound.

"You really should have handed over the laptop when you had the chance, Captain," Greg sneered coldly.

James did not lower his weapon, his expression completely unreadable and entirely focused.

"If you hurt her, you will not leave this room alive," James stated with chilling calmness.

Greg laughed wickedly and pressed the sharp blade slightly deeper against my mother's skin.

Suddenly, the bedroom door swung completely wide open, revealing another figure in the darkness.

Lauren confidently walked into the room, holding James's highly encrypted military laptop in her hands.

She smiled sweetly, raised a heavy black pistol, and aimed it directly at her own brother-in-law.

"Put the gun down, James, or I will gladly shoot you myself," Lauren commanded.
