Chapter 4 - The Fake Inspection

The woman demanded to inspect Emma's nursery immediately, claiming it was standard federal procedure.

I held my baby tightly, absolutely refusing to let this strange woman out of my sight.

James followed closely behind her, his intense gaze tracking her every single movement.

She walked through the house, barely looking at the actual living conditions or baby supplies.

Instead, her eyes constantly darted toward the hidden corners, air vents, and digital security panels.

"The baby appears perfectly fine, but I will need to conduct a private interview with your husband," she announced.

She was intentionally trying to separate us, perfectly following whatever twisted plan Greg had designed.

"We have absolutely nothing to hide, but we will answer your questions together," James replied with absolute authority.

The woman glared at him, her polite bureaucratic facade completely slipping for a brief second.

She aggressively snapped her briefcase shut and marched back toward the front door.

"You will be hearing from my supervisor first thing in the morning," she threatened coldly.

After she walked out, James immediately locked the heavy deadbolt and rushed to the window.

"She was not looking for signs of child abuse," James stated, watching her car speed away into the night.

"She was scoping out our tactical blind spots and checking the locations of our security cameras."

I walked over to the coffee table where she had intentionally rested her leather briefcase.

She had secretly left behind a tiny, flashing black device perfectly hidden underneath a magazine.

It was a military-grade signal jammer, designed to completely block all outgoing cellular calls.

Before James could grab the device, the entire house plunged into absolute, terrifying darkness.

The heavy hum of the refrigerator died, and the digital alarm panels went completely black.

We were entirely trapped in the dark, and someone was cutting through the back door.
