Chapter 5 - The Darkness

James moved with absolute, terrifying precision in the pitch-black house.
He silently guided me and Emma toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind our master closet.
"Do not make a single sound, no matter what you hear out there," he whispered, kissing my cheek.
He closed the heavy steel door, completely sealing us in the dark, soundproof space.
I sat on the cold floor, holding Emma incredibly tight and praying she would not cry.
Through the thick steel, I could feel the faint, rhythmic vibrations of heavy boots walking upstairs.
They were systematically searching the house, tearing through our belongings to find the encrypted laptop.
I knew James was out there in the dark, hunting the intruders with lethal military efficiency.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening crash echoed violently against the walls of the panic room.
Someone was aggressively swinging a heavy sledgehammer against the reinforced steel door.
"We know you are in there, little bird," a cruel, mocking voice shouted from the bedroom.
Emma whimpered softly, and I gently covered her mouth to keep her completely silent.
The violent banging stopped, replaced by the terrifying sound of a heavy electric drill.
They were attempting to manually breach the heavy locking mechanism of our only safe haven.
I grabbed the heavy metal flashlight from the emergency kit, entirely prepared to fight to the death.
Then, a completely different voice echoed clearly through the small ventilation grate.
"Please open the door, sweetheart," the familiar, weeping voice begged desperately.

It was my own mother, sobbing uncontrollably just inches away from the steel barrier.
"They have your father, and they are going to kill him if you don't open this door right now!" she screamed.
