Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Pawn

Medical alarms shrieked violently as Doctor Evans rushed frantically to Dominic's completely motionless body on the floor.
"He is in massive cardiac arrest, initiate full emergency resuscitation protocols right now!" the doctor ordered his scrambling team.
I stood frozen, watching the medical staff aggressively perform chest compressions on the man who had just tried to ruin my life.
I realized with absolute, terrifying clarity that the judge and Natalie were systematically executing everyone to tie up loose ends.
"If Dominic dies, Judge Vance will successfully frame you for his murder to invalidate your entire divorce defense," my grandfather warned gravely.
I could not let Dominic die, not because I still loved him, but because he was my primary, living evidence of the massive conspiracy.
I pulled out the tiny, encrypted flash drive Natalie had secretly given me in the courthouse restroom.
"Grandfather, I need your absolutely best, most ruthless cyber-security team to tear this drive apart instantly," I demanded.
My grandfather immediately handed the drive to his lead security expert, who plugged it directly into a highly secure, portable terminal.
Within minutes, the brilliant hacker successfully bypassed the heavy encryption, revealing a massive trove of illegal offshore banking records.
The files contained absolutely undeniable proof that Judge Vance was laundering millions of dollars for the cartel through his courtroom decisions.
"We finally have the smoking gun to completely destroy his entire life and permanently strip him of his gavel," I declared proudly.
We quickly compiled the massive digital evidence into a secure dossier, ready to hand directly to the federal authorities.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the NICU swung completely open, revealing the loud chaos of the hallway outside.
A dozen heavily armed, local police officers marched aggressively into the ward with their hands resting threateningly on their holsters.
I expected them to immediately arrest the unconscious, fake technician currently handcuffed firmly to the hospital bed.
Instead, the deeply corrupt local police chief walked directly past the assassin and stopped squarely in front of me.
He pulled a shiny pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt and glared at me with absolute, malicious intent.

"Audrey Sterling, you are under immediate arrest," the corrupt chief announced loudly for the entire ward to hear.
"We have a signed warrant from Judge Vance for the intentional, premeditated attempted murder of your husband, Dominic."
