Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Alliance

The piercing scream of the hospital fire alarms completely drowned out the sound of my own racing heartbeat.
Dominic collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor, clutching his bleeding forehead in absolute, pathetic despair.
"Get up right now," I commanded fiercely, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole to use as a makeshift weapon.
I absolutely refused to let a cartel hit squad anywhere near my defenseless, premature children.
I sprinted aggressively down the dimly lit hallway, ignoring the intense, burning pain tearing through my healing surgical stitches.
Dominic scrambled frantically behind me, realizing that staying close to me was his only microscopic chance of survival.
We reached the heavy, reinforced security doors of the NICU just as the entire hospital's power grid completely failed.
The hallway was plunged into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of red emergency exit signs.
"The backup generators should have kicked in exactly ten seconds ago," I panicked, banging on the locked automatic doors.
Dominic pulled a heavy, unauthorized electronic access keycard from his torn pocket.
"The judge hired professional fixers to intentionally sabotage the generators," Dominic confessed, swiping the stolen card.
"They wanted to force a massive medical crisis so you would unconditionally surrender your grandfather's shares to save the twins."
The heavy doors clicked open, and we rushed into the completely dark, terrifyingly silent intensive care unit.
The incubator monitors were running on rapidly depleting internal batteries, beeping frantically in the darkness.
Doctor Evans and the terrified nursing staff were already manually pumping oxygen bags to keep the premature infants alive.
My grandfather's elite security team had completely barricaded the main entrance, heavily armed and ready for a violent assault.
"Grandfather, the cartel hitmen are actively inside the building," I shouted, rushing to Liam and Chloe's incubators.
My grandfather calmly drew a silver, customized firearm from his tailored suit jacket, his eyes perfectly steady.
"Nobody breaches this ward while I am still breathing," my grandfather declared with absolute, lethal certainty.
Suddenly, a loud, violent crashing sound echoed from the heavy ventilation shaft directly above our heads.
A man dressed completely in a fake hospital technician uniform dropped heavily from the ceiling grid onto the floor.
He immediately pulled a suppressed handgun from his toolbelt and aimed it directly at the manual override controls for the oxygen supply.

If he destroyed those controls, every single baby in the ward would suffocate in less than five minutes.
Without a single second of hesitation, Dominic surprisingly tackled the fake technician violently against the sterile cabinets.
