Chapter 7 - The Server Room Breach

The blaring rejection sound of the card reader echoed loudly in the empty loading dock.

"They deactivated your badge," Arthur whispered, quickly pulling a suppressed tactical pistol from his holster.

I stared at the red light, my mind desperately searching for a backdoor access code I had learned during my auditing days.

"Wait, let me try the manual emergency override protocol," I said, pushing Arthur's hand down gently.

I typed a complex, thirty-character alphanumeric sequence into the security keypad, praying the old maintenance code was still active.

The heavy steel door clicked loudly and slowly swung open, granting us unrestricted access to the dark building.

We slipped quietly into the service elevator, bypassing the heavily guarded main lobby entirely.

Arthur pressed the button for the forty-fifth floor, where the massive corporate server farm was securely located.

The elevator ride felt like an eternity, the silent tension between us thick enough to cut with a knife.

We stepped out into the freezing, dimly lit server room, the loud humming of thousands of computers masking our footsteps.

"Find the main terminal," Arthur ordered, keeping his weapon raised as he scanned the maze of server racks.

I hurried toward the center of the room, locating the primary access console used by the lead network administrators.

I plugged the silver USB drive into the secure port and immediately began typing incredibly complex decryption commands.

Rows of highly classified, incriminating financial documents began rapidly downloading from the cloud directly into the FBI's secure tipline server.

"It is working," I whispered excitedly, watching the progress bar hit fifty percent.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Vivian," a familiar, arrogant voice echoed through the cold room.

Julian stepped out from behind a row of towering servers, holding a heavy silver handgun aimed directly at my chest.

He looked terrible, his expensive suit wrinkled and his eyes wide with a manic, desperate energy.

Arthur instantly moved to shield me, pointing his tactical pistol directly at Julian's head.

"Drop the weapon, Julian, or you die right here," Arthur commanded with absolute, terrifying authority.

Julian laughed hysterically, tears of profound madness streaming down his pale face.

"I have nothing left to lose, Arthur," Julian screamed, his hand trembling violently on the trigger.

He confessed that his mother had completely disowned him after the hospital disaster, leaving him with absolutely no money and no future.

"I am going to kill the woman who ruined my life, and then I am going to kill you," Julian threatened blindly.

Before anyone could pull a trigger, the heavy glass doors of the server room completely shattered.
