Chapter 4 - The Escape in the Dark

The emergency alarms began blaring loudly through the pitch-black hospital corridors.

Red strobe lights flickered desperately, casting terrifying, unnatural shadows across the ruined delivery room.

Arthur instantly moved to my side, wrapping his strong arm securely around my trembling shoulders.

"Eleanor's mercenaries just blew the main power grid to create a distraction," Arthur whispered directly into my ear.

He guided me off the hospital bed, supporting my weak, exhausted body as my legs threatened to give out.

I held my baby tightly against my chest, wrapping him in my own hospital gown to protect him from the falling dust.

We could hear Julian screaming blindly in the darkness, cursing his mother for abandoning him in the chaos.

Arthur completely ignored them, leading me swiftly through a hidden maintenance door at the back of the ward.

We descended a narrow, concrete stairwell, moving as fast as my post-labor body could possibly manage.

"I have an armored vehicle waiting in the underground parking garage," Arthur explained quietly as we descended.

I asked him why Eleanor would go to such extreme, violent lengths just to secure a corporate inheritance.

Arthur sighed heavily, his breath visible in the freezing air of the emergency stairwell.

"It is not just about the inheritance, Vivian," he replied, his tone growing incredibly serious.

He revealed that the Vance corporation was currently facing a massive, multi-billion dollar federal indictment for international money laundering.

"Eleanor needed a legitimate heir to access a restricted offshore trust fund that contains enough untraceable cash to buy off the federal judges," Arthur explained.

I suddenly remembered the small folder of copied documents I had hidden beneath my mattress back at my tiny apartment.

"I know about the shell companies," I blurted out, my voice echoing slightly in the concrete space.

Arthur stopped moving and looked at me with intense, surprised curiosity.

I told him about my past as a contract auditor and how I had secretly copied all of Julian's careless financial records before they kicked me out.

"I have the exact routing numbers and digital signatures proving Eleanor personally authorized the money laundering," I confessed.

Arthur's eyes widened with profound respect and a glimmer of genuine hope.

"You have the exact evidence the FBI needs to permanently dismantle their entire criminal empire," he said in awe.

We reached the heavy metal doors leading to the underground parking garage and pushed them open.

A sleek, heavily armored black SUV was waiting for us with its engine quietly purring in the shadows.

We rushed toward the vehicle, believing we had finally escaped the immediate danger.

Suddenly, the screeching of tires echoed through the garage as three black vans aggressively blocked the exit ramp, heavily armed men pouring out of them.
