Chapter 6 - The Digital Trap

The devastating news hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

"If Eleanor has those documents, she will destroy the evidence and we will have nothing," I panicked, my heart racing wildly.

Arthur began pacing in front of the fireplace, his mind working furiously to find an alternative solution.

I closed my eyes, forcing myself to think like the ruthless, meticulous contract auditor I used to be.

"She doesn't have the real evidence," I suddenly announced, opening my eyes with a renewed sense of fierce determination.

Arthur stopped pacing and looked at me in absolute confusion.

"I spent years hunting corporate criminals, Arthur," I explained, a confident smile finally breaking through my exhaustion.

I revealed that the physical folder hidden beneath my mattress was nothing more than a carefully constructed decoy.

"The papers in that folder are heavily redacted copies filled with intentionally corrupted data," I stated proudly.

Arthur let out a massive sigh of relief, crossing the room to sit closely beside me on the leather sofa.

"Where are the actual, unedited files?" he asked, his blue eyes shining with profound admiration.

I told him that I had uploaded the original, encrypted files to a secure cloud server managed by an independent law firm.

"The only way to decrypt the files is to physically plug a specific USB drive into the Vance corporation's mainframe server," I explained.

I pulled a small, silver USB drive from the hidden lining of my bra, where I had kept it securely stashed throughout my entire labor.

Arthur stared at the tiny device, realizing it was the ultimate key to completely destroying his lifelong enemies.

"We have to break into the Vance corporate headquarters," Arthur concluded, his tone dangerously serious.

I nodded, knowing it was a completely insane, suicidal plan to infiltrate a heavily guarded skyscraper.

"I still have my active employee access badge," I offered, pulling the plastic card from my wallet.

Julian had been so arrogant and eager to ruin my social life that he had completely forgotten to revoke my corporate security clearance.

Arthur quickly formulated a tactical infiltration plan, gathering his most elite security personnel for the dangerous mission.

He promised to leave a team of highly trained guards at the safe house to protect my sleeping son while we were gone.

I kissed my baby's soft forehead, promising him that I would return to give him the beautiful, safe life he deserved.

Arthur and I climbed into a stealth transport vehicle, preparing to strike directly at the heart of the Vance empire.

We approached the towering glass skyscraper just as the sun began to rise over the sleeping city.

But as we swiped my access badge at the restricted loading dock, the electronic card reader flashed a bright, warning red.
