Chapter 6 - The Setup

I left the corrupt precinct with my heart threatening to beat completely out of my chest.

I hailed a taxi and raced back to the motel, praying I was not too late.

I burst into the room and found my friend sitting calmly on the bed, watching television with Hannah.

I quickly realized that the man in the ski mask had not attacked them.

My friend reached into her purse and pulled out a shiny gold police badge.

She revealed that her real name was Detective Ramirez, and she was an undercover federal agent.

She had been investigating Victor’s syndicate and Kevin’s money laundering operation for over a year.

Ramirez explained that local police were corrupted, but the federal bureau was ready to take them all down.

We needed one final piece of undeniable evidence to arrest the entire family for murder and freeze the assets.

I needed to get a clear, recorded confession from Brenda and Pamela about the hit-and-run.

Ramirez handed me a microscopic recording device and a hidden earpiece.

I drove back to my marital home, sneaking in through the unlocked basement window while they were supposedly eating dinner.

I crept quietly up the stairs and hid directly under the guest room bed.

I heard heavy footsteps walk into the room and stop right next to the bed frame.

Pamela looked under the bed, smiled maliciously, and raised a heavy wooden baseball bat.
