Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

I pounded my fists against the thick vault glass, but Kevin just smiled and walked away.
The air inside the secure room was incredibly thin and suffocating.
I looked frantically around the small space for any possible way to escape.
I noticed a heavy metal step stool tucked into the corner of the room.
I picked it up and smashed it repeatedly against the interior glass door of the vault until a spiderweb of cracks appeared.
With one final, desperate swing, the glass shattered completely.
I climbed through the broken frame and sprinted out the back exit of the bank before the manager could stop me.
I ran five blocks to the nearest police precinct, completely out of breath and trembling.
I slammed the insurance policy and the USB drive onto the front desk, begging for immediate help.
The desk sergeant nodded sympathetically and escorted me into a private interrogation room.
He told me to sit tight and wait for the lead detective to arrive.
Ten minutes later, the heavy metal door clicked open.
It was not a police detective who walked into the room.

Kevin stepped inside, wearing a smug smile and locking the door behind him.
