Chapter 2 - The Escape

I dropped to the floor and crawled frantically toward the booth where Hannah was sleeping.

Kevin stepped through the broken window, his heavy boots crunching loudly on the shattered glass.

He held a metal crowbar in his right hand and a flashlight in his left.

"I know she hid the safety deposit box key here, Claire," Kevin shouted into the darkness.

I realized instantly that the old key in my pocket unlocked much more than just the front door.

I covered Hannah’s mouth gently so she wouldn't make a sound as she woke up.

I scooped her into my arms and crept silently toward the back kitchen exit.

Kevin began overturning tables and smashing dishes, his anger echoing through the empty diner.

I pushed the heavy metal back door open and slipped out into the cold, rainy alleyway.

I strapped Hannah into her car seat as quickly and quietly as humanly possible.

I jumped into the driver's seat and turned the ignition key.

The engine sputtered and died immediately.

I stepped out of the car to check the engine, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

I looked down and saw that all four of my tires had been brutally slashed.

From the shadows of the alley, two large men in dark suits stepped forward and blocked my only exit.
