Chapter 9 - THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE

The fallout was catastrophic for the Sterling family.

Because of the live broadcast and the overwhelming public outrage, Julian’s corrupt judges and paid-off politicians abandoned him immediately to save themselves. The FBI raided the Sterling estate before dawn.

Elena’s flash drive was the final nail in the coffin. It contained exactly what she promised: decades of systemic fraud, money laundering, and extortion.

Julian was denied bail, deemed a severe flight risk. His father suffered a stroke when the feds seized the company assets. The empire crumbled into dust in less than forty-eight hours.

Elena sat in a plush hotel room in Chicago, provided by the news network. She watched the television screen as Julian was paraded out of the federal courthouse in an orange jumpsuit, looking completely defeated.

Arthur walked into the room, holding two cups of coffee. He had a bandage over his cheek, but he was smiling.

"It's over," Elena whispered, tears of relief falling down her face. She looked at Leo, sleeping peacefully in a soft crib. "He can't hurt us ever again."

Arthur handed her the coffee. "You're safe now. Both of you."

He turned to leave, his old, solitary instincts kicking in. "I should get going. I need to find a new rig, get back on the road."

Elena grabbed his sleeve, stopping him. "You traded your truck to save us. You risked your life. You're not leaving, Arthur. We are your family now."
