Chapter 7 - THE SHOWDOWN

Midnight at the rail yard was pitch black, save for the full moon cutting through the fog.

Arthur stood alone in the center of the gravel lot. Elena and the baby were miles away, safely hidden with the journalist.

Headlights pierced the fog. It wasn't one car. It was five black SUVs. Julian Sterling stepped out of the lead vehicle, wearing a tailored cashmere coat, flanked by a dozen heavily armed men.

"You really are stupid," Julian sneered, walking toward Arthur. "Did you actually think I was going to hand you two million dollars? Kill him, and tear apart that RV until you find the drive."

"I didn't bring the drive, Julian," Arthur said, his voice carrying over the empty yard. "And I didn't bring the RV."

Julian frowned. "Then you brought nothing but your own death."

"I brought an audience," Arthur replied.

He pressed a button on a remote in his pocket. Instantly, fifty industrial floodlights blazed to life, blinding Julian and his men. The hidden cameras began rolling, transmitting high-definition video directly to the news syndicate.

Julian shielded his eyes, panic setting in. "Shoot the lights! Shoot him!"

But Arthur had already moved. He ducked behind a rusted train car just as bullets sparked against the metal. He grabbed a massive, heavy-duty tow chain and slammed it into the control lever of a decommissioned crane. The crane’s massive iron hook swung down, crushing the hood of Julian’s lead SUV and trapping his men.
