Chapter 4 - THE TRUCK STOP AMBUSH

The bounty caught up with them in Tennessee.
Arthur had pulled the RV into a massive, neon-lit truck stop to refuel and buy formula for Leo. It was 2:00 AM, raining heavily. He was walking back from the convenience store when he saw them: three black SUVs surrounding the RV. Men with crowbars and suppressed pistols were advancing on the door.
Elena was inside with the baby.
Arthur didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy metal tire iron from the bed of a nearby pickup truck and charged.
He hit the first man so hard the crowbar flew fifty feet across the wet asphalt. The second man raised his pistol, but Arthur tackled him into the fuel pumps, the sheer momentum crushing the breath out of the hired thug.
The third man grabbed Arthur from behind, pressing a knife to his throat. "Sterling says hello, old man."
Before the blade could cut, a deafening air horn blasted through the night.
A massive eighteen-wheeler suddenly swerved into the parking lot, its high beams blinding the attackers. Then another truck pulled in. And another.
Arthur was a legend on the CB radio. He had put out a distress call to his trucker brethren ten minutes before stopping. Five massive freight trucks formed a steel wall around the RV, trapping the SUVs. Big, burly drivers poured out of their cabs, wielding chains, bats, and wrenches.
The thugs dropped their weapons and ran into the night.

Arthur climbed into the RV, breathless and bleeding from a shallow cut on his cheek. Elena was clutching Leo, her eyes wide with terror.
"We need to stop running," Arthur panted, locking the door. "We need to end this."
