Chapter 2 - THE GHOST FROM THE PAST

The emergency room doctors stabilized Elena just in time. The sepsis had been hours away from shutting down her organs. Arthur paid the $2,000 admission deposit in cash from his emergency stash, refusing to leave the waiting room until she opened her eyes.

When she finally did, two days later, the whole ugly truth came spilling out.

The baby’s father wasn't just a deadbeat; he was Julian Sterling, the heir to one of the most corrupt real estate empires in the state. Elena had been his assistant. When she got pregnant, Julian demanded she get rid of the child. When she refused, he didn't just fire her. He used his family's influence to blacklist her from every job in the county, drained her bank accounts through a fraudulent lawsuit, and bribed the landlord of her apartment to evict her.

"He wanted me to die out there, Arthur," Elena wept, clutching baby Leo to her chest in the hospital bed. "He said a bastard child would ruin his political campaign next year. He made sure I had absolutely nothing."

Arthur’s jaw tightened. "He didn't count on me."

Suddenly, the hospital room door swung open. Two men in expensive, tailored suits stepped inside. They didn't look like doctors; they looked like high-end fixers.

"Elena Rossi," the taller man said, completely ignoring Arthur. "Mr. Sterling heard you had a little medical emergency. He's willing to cover the hospital bill and set up a generous trust fund for the boy. All you have to do is sign these papers surrendering full parental rights to the Sterling family, and walk away."

Elena shrank back against the pillows, terrified. They weren't offering a lifeline; they were stealing her son to control the narrative.

Arthur stepped between the suits and the hospital bed. He was six-foot-four, built like a brick wall, with eyes as cold as a frozen windshield.

"The lady isn't signing anything," Arthur rumbled. "Now get out, before I throw you out the third-floor window."
