Chapter 9 - The Rescue

Chloe and I refused to look back down the dark, smoky stairwell.

We burst onto the main floor and raced through the massive, luxurious mansion.

We searched frantically through endless hallways and empty guest bedrooms for the girls.

Suddenly, we heard a soft, familiar crying coming from a locked room at the end of the third-floor hallway.

I threw my shoulder against the heavy door, but it wouldn't budge an inch.

Chloe grabbed a heavy red fire extinguisher from a glass case on the wall.

She swung it with all her might, smashing the brass lock completely off the door frame.

We burst into the lavishly decorated room and found Emma and Lily holding hands tightly in the corner.

The girls looked exactly alike, staring at their frantic mothers in total, frozen shock.

Chloe and I rushed forward and scooped the terrified girls into our protective arms.

We sobbed uncontrollably with pure relief, kissing their faces repeatedly.

We turned around to leave the room, believing the horrible nightmare was finally coming to an end.

We thought we could simply walk out the front door and fly back home.

Suddenly, Victoria appeared silently blocking the only doorway out of the room.

Her expensive suit was covered in dark blood, and she was holding the very gun Daniel had dropped.

She aimed the weapon directly at Emma's chest, her eyes completely devoid of sanity.

Victoria pulled the trigger with a cruel, unforgiving smile on her face.
