Chapter 1 - The Red Heels

I had driven straight from the Nashville airport because I wanted to surprise my family.
I had been away on a stressful business trip for over a week.
I was so excited to see my husband and my beautiful daughter again.
Instead, the moment I opened the front door, my stomach dropped completely.
A pair of bright red women’s heels sat perfectly beside my husband Daniel’s dirty sneakers.
I stared at them for a long time, trying to make sense of the situation.
They weren’t mine, and I definitely had no guests staying over.
“Emma?” I called out loudly into the empty house.
There was absolutely no answer from the living room or the hallway.
Then I heard something scraping heavily across the kitchen floor.
I walked slowly into the kitchen and felt my heart break into a million pieces.
My five-year-old daughter was on her hands and knees with a wet rag in her small hand.
She was desperately trying to clean a massive puddle of spilled grape juice.
Her tiny face was completely covered in fresh, glistening tears.
“Mommy!” she cried out in absolute relief the second she saw me.
She dropped the wet rag and ran directly into my open arms.
I hugged her tightly against my winter coat, kissing the top of her head.
“Why are you cleaning the floor by yourself, sweetie?” I asked her gently.
Emma glanced nervously toward the stairs and lowered her voice to a fearful whisper.
“Daddy said I had to stay downstairs no matter what happened.”
My heart started pounding aggressively against my ribs.
“Why did he say that to you?” I pressed, trying to keep my voice calm.
She pressed her face deeply against my chest, seeking comfort.
“Because Daddy is with some strange lady in your bedroom.”
I went completely still as a terrifying chill ran rapidly down my spine.
Then I heard loud, careless laughter echoing clearly from upstairs.
It was unmistakably a woman’s laughter, echoing down the wooden staircase.
I grabbed the heavy wooden broom handle leaning beside the pantry door.
I gripped it tightly as a weapon and headed furiously for the stairs.
Emma followed closely behind me until I turned around to stop her.
“Stay right here in the kitchen, baby,” I ordered her firmly.
I reached my bedroom at the end of the hall and found the heavy oak door locked from the inside.
“Daniel, open this door right now!” I screamed, pounding my fist against the wood.
Everything inside the room went completely and utterly dead silent.
I took a step back and kicked the door open with all the angry strength I had left.
Daniel jumped away from the bed in sheer panic.
A woman I had never seen before screamed loudly and grabbed a blanket to cover herself.
“Sarah, please wait a second!” Daniel yelled, holding up his hands defensively.
I swung the broom handle hard at Daniel’s shoulder, striking him with a satisfying thud.
I then shoved the unknown woman backward when she aggressively rushed toward me.
“You brought her into my house while our daughter was downstairs crying alone?” I demanded furiously.
Daniel lunged forward and forcefully grabbed the broom from my hands.
“You’re acting completely insane right now!” he shouted back at me in defense.
“Who the hell is she, Daniel?” I asked, my voice trembling with uncontrollable rage.
The woman suddenly shouted, “Tell her the actual truth, Daniel!”
I froze in place, utterly confused by her commanding tone.
Daniel’s face lost all of its color in an instant, turning a sickly shade of white.
The woman stepped directly between us, her body shaking with absolute anger.
“You told me she was your crazy ex-wife who moved away,” she sneered at him.
My fingers loosened their tight grip around the wooden handle.
“What in the world are you talking about?” I whispered to her.
Just then, Emma appeared in the open doorway right behind me.
The woman stared at my daughter with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Her expression changed instantly from fierce anger to pure, unadulterated shock.
She hastily pulled out her phone, opened a photograph, and held it directly toward my face.

The picture clearly showed Daniel holding another little girl who looked almost exactly like Emma.
Then the woman whispered, “That’s our beautiful daughter, and she’s five years old too.”
