Chapter 9 - The Extraction

Panic surged through my veins as I slipped the silver vial safely into my coat pocket.
"How many men are there?" I whispered urgently, walking as calmly as possible toward the vault exit.
"Six men, wearing full tactical gear, carrying suppressed rifles," Logan replied in my ear.
"They are looking for you, Emma."
I reached the heavy steel door just as the bank's deafening fire alarm began blaring loudly.
The security guard who had escorted me looked utterly confused by the sudden, piercing noise.
"Please remain calm, ma'am, we have to evacuate immediately," the guard said, grabbing his radio.
Before he could finish speaking, a massive explosion shook the very foundation of the building.
Dust and plaster fell rapidly from the ceiling as the main lights flickered and died.
The emergency red lighting kicked on, bathing the vault in a sinister, bloody glow.
"Emma, I blew the side entrance," Logan's voice shouted over the static.
"Take the service stairs up to the second floor and jump out the alley window."
I didn't wait to see what the guard would do next.
I sprinted down the dark hallway, ignoring the terrifying screams coming from the lobby above.
I found the hidden service stairs and climbed two steps at a time, my lungs burning for air.
I kicked open the second-floor door and ran into an empty, lavish executive office.
I could hear heavy combat boots pounding up the stairs right behind me.
I rushed to the large window, threw it open, and looked down at the narrow alleyway.
Logan had backed the van right underneath the window, leaving the wide sunroof open.
"Jump!" he yelled from the driver's seat.
The office door behind me shattered under heavy, relentless gunfire.
I closed my eyes tightly and hurled myself out of the window.
I landed hard on a pile of thick mattresses Logan had smartly shoved into the back of the van.
Logan hit the gas before I could even sit up, speeding recklessly away from the chaotic scene.
I pulled the silver vial from my pocket, laughing in absolute, hysterical relief.

"I got the cure," I told him, holding up the glowing blue liquid.
Sophia was finally going to live.
