Chapter 6 - The Blood Traitor

I stared at my brother in absolute, horrifying disbelief.

David had left home ten years ago, claiming he was joining the military to travel the world.

"David?" I whispered, my voice trembling as I held the crying child.

David looked at me, his face bruised and bleeding heavily from the crash.

"Run, Emma," he coughed, clutching his injured ribs in obvious pain.

"You don't understand who you are actually protecting."

Logan raised his gun, pointing it directly at my brother's forehead.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't put a bullet in your skull right now," Logan snarled.

"Because if you kill me, you will never get the antidote," David laughed darkly.

Logan froze, the gun trembling slightly in his otherwise steady grip.

"What antidote?" I demanded, looking between the two furious men.

David spat blood onto the grass and smirked up at Logan.

"Tell her, Parker."

"Tell the nurse what is really wrong with your precious daughter."

Logan lowered his weapon slightly, refusing to meet my eyes.

"Sophia doesn't have leukemia," Logan confessed, his voice barely audible over the wind.

"She was poisoned with a slow-acting, synthetic radiation toxin."

My stomach churned violently as the horrifying truth washed over me.

All those nights of agonizing chemotherapy, all the vomiting and the pain, were completely useless.

The brutal medical treatments were just a clever cover to hide the assassination attempt from the public.

"Who poisoned her?" I asked, stepping away from Logan in disgust.

David looked at me with deep, unexpected sadness in his eyes.

"Our grandmother did, Emma."

"And I am the only person alive who knows where the cure is hidden."
