Chapter 1 - The Echo

The heavy oak door of Sophia’s bedroom suddenly burst open.
I jumped, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs.
Logan Parker stood in the doorway, his chest heaving as if he had just sprinted all the way up the grand staircase.
His usually perfectly styled hair was disheveled.
The cold, calculated demeanor of the billionaire I had met three days ago was completely gone.
He stared at me with a look of pure, unadulterated terror.
"Where did you learn that song?" he demanded, his voice trembling.
I pulled my hand away from Sophia’s, feeling a sudden chill fill the room.
"My grandmother used to sing it to me," I stammered.
"It is just an old Italian lullaby."
Logan stepped into the room, his dark eyes darting to the hidden camera nestled in the bookshelf.
"Your grandmother?" he asked, stepping dangerously closer to me.
"What was her exact name?"
"Maria Foster," I answered, my voice barely above a whisper.
Logan’s face drained of all remaining color.
He pulled a sleek black phone from his pocket and dialed a single number.
"Lock down the estate immediately," Logan ordered the person on the other end of the line.
"Nobody gets in, and absolutely nobody leaves."
He hung up the phone and looked back at me with cold fury.
"My wife did not die of cancer, Emma."
May you like
"She was brutally murdered by a woman named Maria Foster."
"And now, you are going to tell me exactly who sent you into my home."
